The Road Ahead

The creation of this digital toolkit represents the beginning of a broader commitment to supporting survivor autonomy and enhancing practitioner competence in the implementation of self-directed training.

As the field of neurorehabilitation continues to explore evidence-based strategies for high-intensity recovery, the following pillars serve as a roadmap for the ongoing development, sustainability, and dissemination of this resource.

These efforts focus on bridging the gap between theoretical frameworks and daily clinical practice to ensure that SDT becomes a manageable and integrated part of the inpatient recovery journey.

Building on the introductory vision for Beyond the Therapy Hour, the following sections outline the specific strategies for dissemination, institutional integration, and the long-term expansion of this digital toolkit.

These pillars ensure that the resource remains a living, evidence-informed asset for the occupational therapy community.

Professional Dissemination and Outreach

A primary focus of this work is the dissemination of evidence-based implementation strategies to the global occupational therapy community.

Findings from the systematic review were presented at the WFOT 2026 Congress in Bangkok, and will be followed by two poster sessions at AOTA INSPIRE 2026 focusing on the key components of self-directed training and the effectiveness of self-directed training interventions in the inpatient setting.

These presentations aim to provide practitioners with a clear evidence-informed framework for integrating self-directed training into standard care.

Beyond formal conferences, advocacy will continue through professional networks such as the AOTA CommunOT forums and a dedicated Instagram social media presence, translating complex data into digestible multimedia resources for clinicians worldwide.

Institutional Integration and Leadership

To bridge the gap between high-level evidence and daily clinical practice, this work focuses on direct institutional integration through mentorship and leadership.

Future directions include conducting "lunch and learn" in-services and collaborating with rehabilitation management to incorporate self-directed training implementation into standard professional development programs.

Recognizing the role of mentorship in clinical growth, the toolkit will be utilized as a supplemental resource for Level II fieldwork students, ensuring the next generation of therapists is equipped with these specialized implementation skills.

By integrating pilot implementation guides directly into this digital toolkit as part of the goals for expansion, the goal is to provide the resources necessary for clinicians to facilitate self-directed training effectively within high-volume caseloads.

Digital Toolkit Expansion and Content Development

A review of the literature conducted by the author as well as clinical experiences highlighted specific areas where resources are currently lacking, particularly regarding caregiver involvement and administrative support.

Future expansions of the toolkit will include tailored modules for caregivers to provide safe and effective supplemental training support, as well as evidence-based rationales for administrators to justify the space and resource allocation required for self-directed training.

To enhance global accessibility, development will focus on providing multilingual resources and a wider variety of printable functional handouts.

Finally, integrated feedback tools and post-use evaluation surveys will be used to gather practitioner input, ensuring the toolkit remains a living, responsive resource that evolves alongside the latest neurorehabilitation evidence.
