Behind The Toolkit
Meet the Occupational Therapist behind Beyond The Therapy Hour

Meet the voice behind the vision
Patricia Librea, MS, OTR/L, CSRS, is an occupational therapist and educator dedicated to making high-quality stroke recovery accessible and practical. Based in California, she serves as a faculty member at West Coast University and is currently completing her post-professional doctorate in Occupational Therapy at New York University. With an extensive background in acute care and specialized certification in stroke rehabilitation, Patricia focuses on bridging the gap between clinical research and the actual work performed at the bedside.

Her work is rooted in the understanding that the most effective stroke recovery happens when survivors are empowered to continue their progress outside of formal sessions. By studying the early windows of neuroplasticity and listening to the needs of both patients and therapists, she identified that the key to successful implementation is foundational clinician readiness. This led to the development of "Beyond the Therapy Hour," a toolkit developed in culmination of her doctoral work at New York University. As a primary component of her OTD portfolio, the toolkit is built on the principle that true readiness is a combination of evidence-based knowledge and practical skills. By equipping practitioners with these essential tools first, the toolkit ensures they have the confidence and resources needed to facilitate self-directed training effectively.

In her dual roles as a clinician and an educator, Patricia is committed to strengthening the profession by providing clear actionable strategies that build practitioner expertise. Her goal is to foster a collaborative rehabilitation environment where clinician knowledge and survivor autonomy go hand in hand, ensuring that functional gains are sustained long after the therapy hour ends.

The Core Values Behind This Work
The foundation of this toolkit is built on the belief that effective stroke rehabilitation requires a seamless integration of evidence-based research, clinician readiness, and survivor-centered advocacy. By translating complex evidence into structured, practical tools, this work bridges the gap between clinical research and actual bedside practice.

Central to this philosophy is the principle that true clinical readiness is the result of combining foundational knowledge with practical skills. This "knowledge plus skills" approach equips practitioners with the reasoning needed to facilitate increased patient activity and self-directed training that extends beyond the traditional therapy session. By prioritizing this initial preparedness, clinicians gain the confidence to lead high-quality recovery effectively.

In the dual role of clinician and educator, the focus remains on fostering a collaborative environment where professional expertise and survivor autonomy go hand in hand. By grounding practice in critical thinking and empathy, this approach ensures that functional gains are sustained for the long term. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the profession while making high-quality stroke recovery both accessible and practical for every survivor.
